Governance & Finance

The work of the Governing Body at our School is varied and challenging.

The guide below should help parents and carers, as well as the wider community, understand how Governors help support and challenge the Head teacher, leading to improving out comes for pupils.

I can be contacted through the school office if you would like to discuss any issues relating to our school. They will pass on my contact details.

Sadik Alormasor

Chair of Governors,
Normanby Primary School,
Ironstone Academy Trust.

Are you interested in becoming a Governor at Normanby Primary School?

We currently have no vacancies for Governors.

What do Governors do?

Governors play an important role in the decision making and running of the school, in conjunction with the headteacher, staff and the Board of Trustees. Becoming a Governor would allow you to have input into the work of the school. The Governing Body has three core functions, being:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

How much time would I be expected to give?

The Governing Board meets three times per year with those meetings taking place on an evening. In addition, Governors are also encouraged to get to know the school by visiting during the day when it is safe to do so.That could mean visiting either once or twice each term.

You will receive training to carry out your role and it will develop your skills, both personally and professionally. It will allow you the opportunity to see how the school is managed from the schools’ perspective, providing you with the opportunity to have a say in how it is managed.

If you are interested in applying, please contact the school office and ask for an application form. If you would like more information on the role of a Governor, you can either speak to the headteacher or contact the Clerk of the Governing Body by email: amy.douglas@redcar-cleveland.gov.uk

Governance Information

Our Governing Body

Kathryn Pentney – Head Teacher
Sadik Alormasor – Chair of Governors: Safeguarding, SEND and Designated Governor for Children in our Care / Appointed Governor
Susan Griffin – Appointed Governor: Designated Safeguarding Governor
I decided to become a Governor to give something back to this lovely school. I am the Safeguarding Governor and also work with KS1.

I hope to offer as much support as possible and learn more about the work that goes on behind the scenes.
Andrew Stogdale – Appointed Governor: Curriculum
I wanted to become a school governor for several reasons. Firstly I wanted to help support a school and offer my experience to making it the best place possible for the pupils and staff.

Secondly, I felt that it was a brilliant opportunity to develop my understanding of school governance and the issues affecting education from a school leadership point of view.
Denise Bollands – Vice Chair. Appointed Governor: Designated Pupil Premium Governor including children with additional funding
I have been a governor since January 2018. I had taken early retirement and wanted to give something back to the community.

I enjoy meeting the children and staff and seeing the children’s work.
The hardest part is making sure I am up to date with all of the policies and new guidelines, as there are always so many changes to be aware of.

My main role is to work alongside the other governors to help the Head Teacher and staff to make sure the school is the best it can be and that children are receiving the best teaching and learning opportunities possible. My responsibilities are Pupil Premium and Key Stage One.
Carl Faulkner – CEO
Gill Callaghan – Teacher Governor
I enjoy having an active role in the direction of the school from an academic and extra curricular stand point. Coupled with my role as a teacher, being a governor at NPS is something I am incredible proud of, both of which allow me to shape the future of the pupils and the paths they are about to embark upon.
Andrew Drage – Appointed Governor: Curriculum
I have worked at Normanby Primary School for 11 years. During this time, I have been actively involved in all aspects of school life and have always been interested in school improvement. I have leadership responsibility for curriculum innovation and act as school pupil premium champion. Both roles have meant that I am quite confident and comfortable dealing with a range of stakeholders and understand how whole-school improvement is implemented, driven and assessed. It is a pleasure teaching in a school with such fantastic children, parents/carers and staff and a privilege to be a member of the governing body.
Hayley Collins – Appointed Governor: Designated Online Safety Governor
Lyndsey Farrell – Parent Governor: KS1
Georgina Lodge – Parent Governor: Designated Governor for Mental Health and Wellbeing
Kate Levett – Teacher Governor
Tina Hart – Staff Governor
Elaine Beaumont – Appointed Governor

Governance at Normanby Primary School

Governors work to “ensure clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction” at our School

The Executive Head Teacher was appointed by Governors as he represented the direction they wished school to travel in, meetings are open and Governors representing all sections of the school and community have opportunity to contribute to the schools development. Smaller working groups give Governors and staff the chance to develop their understanding of specific issues and work alongside our staff.

Governors “contribute to the school’s self-evaluation and understand its strengths and weaknesses”.

All Governors can attend the schools termly standards meeting where all pupil performance data is analysed, their feedback is used by Senior Leadership Team to revise the schools self-evaluation and plan future improvements.

Governors “support and strengthen school leadership”.

The Executive Head Teacher has been supported in developing his leadership in the school and the wider school community ( as a National Leader of Education and previously an OfSTED Additional School Inspector), staffing decisions have allowed all teachers time to research teaching and develop their role in leadership in school and the wider educational community.  The Head of School has worked successfully as a Specialist Leader of Education and knows our school and community well having worked here as at teacher previously and as Assistant Head Teacher for a number of years.

Governors can “provide challenge and hold the Headteacher and other senior leaders to account for improving the quality of teaching, pupils’ achievement and pupils’ behaviour and safety”.

Governors have freedom to ask any questions of the Head teacher in full meetings, committee meetings have full access to reports and pupil data (eg RAISEonline) and training is made available to assist Governors understanding of the schools current position.

Governors “use performance management systems, including the performance management of the HT, to improve teaching, leadership and management”.

The use of an external advisor ensures that procedures for the Head teachers Performance Management are followed with due care, the Head reports to Governors on the Performance Management of all staff. The Senior Leadership Team have had training on current requirements for Teachers Performance Management and Pay Progression. The school has linked all Teachers, and Support Staff, targets to the School Improvement Plan.

Governors “ensure solvency and probity and that the school’s financial resources are managed effectively”?

The school complies with all guidance and returns all records to the appropriate bodies in a timely manner. The school employs a specialist advisory service to assist in budget planning and management.

Do we “operate in such a way that statutory duties are met and priorities are approved”?

Yes

Do we “engage with key stakeholders”?

Regular surveys of parents and carers indicate that the school is well led, but we are aware we can do more as Governors to support increased understanding of our role in the community.

Do we “use the pupil premium and other resources to overcome barriers to learning including reading, writing and maths”?

Data indicates that Normanby Primary School has had many successes in it’s skilful use of the Pupil Premium.  Further details can be found on the Pupil Premium section of the website. Pupil Premium Page of the Website
