Welcome to our Year 2 Page
In Year 2, we strive to create a positive and stimulating learning environment for our children. We endeavour to challenge children to reach their full potential and enjoy a feeling of accomplishment. In Year 2, independence is key! We motivate children to lead their own learning, building confidence along the way. Feelings of safety and trust are of utmost importance for our young learners, in order for them to feel secure in their ability.
Term by Term
In Autumn, we travel back in time to 1666 to explore first-hand what it was like during the Great Fire of London. We delve into Samuel Pepys’ diary to witness the devastating effects that the fire caused. We recreate Pudding Lane through the creation of houses during DT lessons and visit Grangetown Fire Station to gain an understanding about how the fire service has developed over time. This enables us to answer our key question – How have the events of the Great fire of London impacted our lives today?
The Spring term challenges us to be both geographers and historians as we research Antarctic explorers then and now. We look at Ernest Shackleton’s journey and understand the meaning of teamwork and endurance. In Year 2, we know the importance of being digitally confident, using safe websites under supervision to carry out exciting research. Parents and carers are invited into our ‘Antarctic puppet-making workshop’, to showcase their sewing skills. As part of our Science work, we look at animals including humans.
Summer term takes us to sand, sea and sunny Hawaii! We discover the geographical features of these vibrant islands. The children tantalise their taste buds, preparing and sampling the fine cuisine of the country, before kicking back and enjoying a chilled out Hawaiian party on the field. Of course, no party would be complete without a world famous limbo competition to end the festivities. Speaking of beaches, this term allows us to have a taste of seaside life. We explore Saltburn, looking at its old town culture and enjoy the beach!
Incorporated into each term, we are proud to support our Year 2 charity ‘The Great North Air Ambulance’. A range of fund raising opportunities encourage the children to think charitably to facilitate empathetic and compassionate skills.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
We encourage our children to build their confidence by taking part in our Christmas performance. The buzz of excitement around school during this wonderful time really is magical.
24 hour classroom
In Year 2, we understand the importance of learning outside the classroom! We use Marvellous Me to communicate the exciting things we do inside and outside, including thought-provoking and inspiring Science activities.
To conclude
We know that a positive educational experience now shapes the foundations for later life, which is why we pride ourselves on creating a learning environment that children love to be a part of. Our staff are friendly and approachable and strive to make the school community a wonderful place.
