Phonics
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is the school’s chosen programme for the teaching of phonics at Normanby Primary School. Children are taught Phonics daily and read phonically matched books to develop their fluency and reading automaticity. Reading for enjoyment books are also sent home to develop a love of reading and oral storytelling.
Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme is effective in providing:
- Direct teaching of Phonics in short bursts
- Consistency in teaching approaches
- Secure and systematic progression in Phonics teaching
- Pace of learning
- Repeated practice
- Effective application of Phonics using matched decodable books
- Early identification of children at risk of falling behind
- Effective intervention support
Each Phonics session follows the introduce, revisit and review, teach, practise and apply format. Reading practice sessions support pupils as they develop the skills of decoding, prosody and comprehension. Developing reading in this structured way ensures that pupils learn new sounds whilst applying this knowledge and understanding to the reading of new words.
