Welcome to our Year 1 page
Year one marks the start of the journey from the Early Years Foundation Stage into Key Stage 1. The transition between curriculums encourages pupils to develop a range of new skills as they learn to work with greater focus, resilience and independence. The Y1 curriculum and topics are exciting and challenging, and the learning environment is fun and stimulating!
Term by Term
In the Autumn term, the pupils enjoy learning about a number of animals living in the local area. High quality books provide much of the stimulus as pupils enjoy finding out about the characteristics, behaviour, habitats and diets of owls, hedgehogs, worms and other animals through a range of stories. The children enjoy sketching, painting and making collages of these animals and develop their motor and knife skills by making their own edible ‘Hedgehog Dip’ . A visit to the Kirkleatham Owl Centre provides another exciting opportunity for the pupils to extend their learning outside the classroom and to meet owls from all over the world! After returning to school, they enjoy getting stuck in dissecting owl pellets in Science!
In the Spring term, the pupils enjoy learning about the history of toys and how they have evolved and become more advanced over time. They find out about the materials toys were made from and how toys owned by rich and poor families varied. The pupils work collectively to produce pieces of work to showcase to their parents and carers at the Y1 Toy Museum. They are introduced to Paddington Bear and enjoy learning about the geography of his adventures by exploring his connections with London and Peru. The pupils enjoy getting their paws sticky as they discover the delights of marmalade sandwiches, and challenge themselves in Science by testing materials suitable for his new raincoat as they become cutting edge coat designers!
In the Summer term, the pupils become immersed in writing and storytelling after reading a number of traditional and alternative tales. These stories challenge their thinking and encourage them to think more creatively about some of the most loved characters. A visit to the Guisborough Branch Walkway helps them to develop their knowledge of animal habitats in the local forest and to find out more about wild plants, flowers and trees through a number of ranger led activities such as pond dipping and nature trails. Back in school, the children develop their knowledge of plants further by exploring leaf art and preparing their own tasty summer fruit salads.
Stand Out Moments
Christmas is a magical time of the year at Normanby Primary School. The children always enjoy the buzz of Christmas as they enjoy crafting, learning about the meaning of Christmas and work together to create a memorable Christmas performance to share with parents and carers.
Class assemblies provide an opportunity for pupils to showcase their talents, memorable moments and work they are proud of! Speaking in front of an audience of parents and carers encourages the pupils to work as a team and helps them to develop confidence performing with their peers.
Swimming
Everyone loves going swimming in Y1 and it is definitely one of the stand out moments for the pupils as they are given the opportunity to develop confidence and skills in the pool at the Rainbow Centre!
24 hour classroom…
In Year 1, we use Seesaw to set pieces of homework and to provide work which supports, reinforces and extends teaching in school.
Proud to Support…
In Year One, we are proud to support the Kirkleatham Owl Centre. The money we raise helps this local volunteer led charity care, and provide a sanctuary, for owls and other endangered animals from all over the world.
To conclude
Year 1 is an important school year where the foundations for future learning are made. We strive to create a climate in which children enjoy learning and are excited to come to school.
