Normanby Primary School has a strong tradition of striving to achieve well in sport; in 2014, Governors took the decision to re-energise sport at our school, with a focus on competition and creating a sporting habit for life in our young people. Governors made use of the additional funding called the PE and Sport Premium for primary schools to support the Head Teacher in leading this change.

Mr Faulkner used the additional funding to make improvements to PE and sport for pupils at our school. We have employed three sports coaches and a specialist PE teacher to both teach PE and to extend the range of extra-curricular sports activities available. Providing staff with professional development in PE was also included in our action plan.

The government has provided the funding and this year (2019), we have seen the funding doubled. This ensures pupils are being provided with not only high quality PE teaching but with new specialist equipment. Additionally, our children have more opportunities to participate in sport and physical activity.

The PE department reported to Governors that the premium has enabled all our children to access and participate in several ‘new’ sports and for many, excel in PE and competitive school sport. The funding has also been used to help selected pupils overcome personal difficulties and as a platform to improve their physical and social development.

We are working in partnership with a range of local organisations and other schools to share expertise and extend provision and currently offer 14 extra-curricular sports clubs.

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education (PE), physical activity and sport you offer.

This means that you should use the premium to:

Active miles

Where schools choose to take part in an active mile, you should use your existing playgrounds, fields, halls and sports facilities to incorporate an active mile into the school day and develop a lifelong habit of daily physical activity.
